Layover and Minimum Connecting Time (MCT)

MCT – Minimum Connecting Time…

Airlines are supposed to allow a specific amount of time between connecting flights. The minimum connection time varies by Airport, Type of Connection and Airline (Domestic to Domestic or Domestic to International or International to International or International to Domestic). Each Airport has its own list of minimum connection times. If you book connecting flights on the same Airline the reservation system is supposed to use this minimum connection time information to determine how much time you will have to change Aircrafts.

This seems like a simple process, but the passenger who has run through the situation can only understand the scenario. Usually once a person or a group are planning a trip that involves connecting flights, they may wish to choose a connecting flight that is different from the one your Airline's Computerised Reservation System (CRS) recommends. There are many factors that can affect how much time you have to change planes, and it is your responsibility to plan an itinerary that includes an appropriate airport layover. Usual practice is at least 60 to 90 minutes for a Domestic connection and at least two hours for an International connection. Airlines usually allow you four hours or more maximum connecting time.

To determine how much time you will need to change the Aircraft in a particular Airport, look up minimum connecting times online and factor in extenuating circumstances that might apply to your trip.

The following factors could affect the amount of time you have to get to your connecting flight:

  • Changing Flights of Different Airlines
  • Customs and Immigration Procedure
  • Security Screenings Process
  • Airport Size
  • Weather Issue
  • Wheelchair Assistance (If Require)
  • Baggage Collection (Domestic to International or International to Domestic)
  • Airport Terminal Change

Consider allowing at least 60 to 90 minutes for a Domestic connection and at least two hours for an international connection. Airlines usually allow you four hours or more maximum connecting time.
